Children’s Sunday School

The mission of Sunday School is to facilitate children in developing a closer relationship with Jesus Christ through small group study and worship. St. John’s offers Sunday School for children from 3 years to high school on Sunday mornings from 10:05 to 10:50 am.

Children are born with an innate sense of wonder and faith that is real and authentic. As parents, teachers and leaders, our role is to provide a foundation of experiences on which children build a life of learning and growth toward a mature and vital faith. With intentional learning and Christian formation, we become the people God calls us to be.

Along with the 252 Basics curriculum that teaches the Bible and life application, each grade level has a faith development milestone to accomplish during the school year.

So what’s this 252 Basics curriculum all about?

The Church Piece…

Well, when you see the word “basics” in the title, you sort of think foundational, essential, right? That’s what 252 Basics does—it equips kids with basic truths. In fact, when a kid transitions into middle school, we want that child to have experienced and owned three basic truths modeled by Jesus in Luke 2:52 (light bulb moment—now you know what the 252 means):

     •  I need to make the wise choice.

     •  I can trust God no matter what.

     •  I should treat others the way I want to be treated.

These truths are reinforced each week in an easy-to-use curriculum that is designed to put your mind at ease and your heart into overdrive.

So that’s the foundation, but we do more than teaching three basic ideas. We also take kids into the heart of God’s Big Story through Bible Stories and other important tools. Each month we have a new theme to teach our monthly virtue. The virtue, or character of God being studied, is at the heart of our weekly bottom line messages, our monthly memory verses, and spills over to the home through the Parent CUE, GodTime Cards and Widgets.

The Home Piece…

252 Basics Groups curriculum wouldn’t be complete without parent pieces to synchronize the home with what’s going on at church. These pieces can be picked up on the easel in the Education Hallway:

Parent CUE: Notes to parents to help them leverage everyday moments with their child
to Connect to God’s story, to uncover something about life, and to Experience
     something together.

GodTime Cards: Kids’ notes to help children establish a consistent devotional
     experience.

Widgets: Objects that helps families remember how to apply the virtue in their lives.
Each month there is a new widget to use to reinforce the virtue we are learning
     about at church.
